Ah, the dollies...
My bags of leftover yarns from various projects, by no means, ever go to waste. Yes, I've made quite a few of these little toys over the years. Girls in yellow dresses with blue satin sashes. Boys in overalls with golden eyelashes. You get the picture. These dolls aren't so much for children, as they are my children! And each has its own personality--just like my own two kids!

Hanging out at the Los Laureles Lodge Christmas Fair. |
The dollies are made here and there all year-long, but I really put pedal to metal (or needle to yarn) around July. My hands are kept busy preparing for Los Laureles Lodge Christmas Fair in early December. My table, a staple for the past six years or so, just has to be stocked--with lots of dollies, among other things--because there are good homes waiting!
A dolly begins with a cast on 35 stitches (depending on the thickness of the yarn) on four needles, knitting in the round. Suddenly--those stitches become shoes. If you decide to give this a try, I recommend using two needles (but then you'll have to sew the back together.) Then it's knit, knit, knit! After I stuff each, I loop the hair, add the eyes, trim with lace and embroidery--and of course, out comes the personality! I'd be happy to share a pattern with any interested knitters because they are really a joy to make.
Funny story. Not long ago, I was strolling through one of the SPCA shops in Carmel (never know what treasures are to be had!) and low and behold---there was one of my dolls. She was sitting in the basket of dog toys, of all places, looking a bit lost and scared. So would I, knowing my destiny was a mouth full of drool, a trip through the air and having my stuffing clenched tightly between a jaw. I immediately snatched her up, paid the .50 cent price tag--and took her home.
She has found her way home--for good. And is happy overseeing the doll workshop.
Reunited--and in good company--with her buddies. |
That is such a cute story! We would never let Mr. Bago have a dollie!!! But I do have a 1.5 year old great-great niece who may just need one. Haven't had a baby to buy for for such a long time ;-)
